Now for the reality check: regular timing is one of the most challenging habits for adolescents, to say the least. For one, early school start times force many teens to wake up when their brains are biologically timed to be asleep, so they are forced into an external schedule that is out of sync with their internal schedule (which produces social jet lag). Then, many teens will go into full vampire mode on non-school nights—hanging out with friends or playing a video game until the wee hours (remember, technology is more than happy to prey on a teen’s delayed sleep clock). The morning after staying up late, a teen is in deep sleep when his parents get up to make breakfast, grab the paper, and start the day. He’s having full, elaborate REM sleep dreams when his little sister starts her soccer game at 9:00 a.m. If he finally emerges at 11:00 a.m., he’s completed a full night’s sleep, but now his internal clock will not allow him to fall asleep anywhere close to his regular bedtime that night, and the jet lag cycle continues.

Working within the confines of the school schedule we currently have, we may not get to perfect timing, but improvement is the name of the game. Improving your sleep timing is within your reach, and remember, even thirty minutes of change make a difference. Every step you take toward improving your sleep timing will make you feel happier, healthier, and more productive.
